Proximal Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy: An Effective Tool to Discern Rain from Irrigation

نویسندگان

چکیده

Proximal gamma-ray spectroscopy is a consolidated technology for continuous and real?time tracing of soil water content at field scale. New developments have shown that this method can also act as an unbiased tool remotely distinguishing rainwater from irrigation without any meteorological support information. Given single detector, the simultaneous observation in gamma spectrum transient increase 214Pb signal, coupled with decrease 40K acts effective proxy rainfall. A both signals is, instead, reliable fingerprint irrigation. We successfully proved rationale two data-taking campaigns performed on agricultural test different crop types (tomato maize). The moisture levels were assessed via signal basis one-time setup calibration. validation against set gravimetric measurements showed excellent results bare vegetated conditions. Simultaneously, observed rain-induced permitted to identify accurately rain events occurred 8852 h data taking.

Proximal Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy to Predict Soil Properties Using Windows and Full-Spectrum Analysis Methods

Fine-scale spatial information on soil properties is needed to successfully implement precision agriculture. Proximal gamma-ray spectroscopy has recently emerged as a promising tool to collect fine-scale soil information. The objective of this study was to evaluate a proximal gamma-ray spectrometer to predict several soil properties using energy-windows and full-spectrum analysis methods in two...

X-Ray Spectroscopy of Gamma-Ray Bursts

Observational evidence of iron absorption and emission lines in X-ray spectra of Gamma-Ray Bursts is quite compelling. I will briefly review the results, summarize different models and describe the connection with massive progenitors in star-forming regions implied by these results. This link is also supported by measurements of the X-ray absorbing gas in several GRB’s, with column density cons...

CdZnTe Gamma Ray Spectrometer for Orbital Gamma Ray Spectroscopy

We present the design and analysis of a new gamma ray spectrometer for planetary science that uses an array of CdZnTe detectors to achieve the detection efficiency needed for orbital measurements. The use of CdZnTe will provide significantly improved pulse height resolution relative to scintillation-based detectors, with commensurate improvement in the accuracy of elemental abundances determine...

Instrumentation for Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy

The subject of ttis chapter is the function and operation of the components of a gamma-ray spectroscopy system. In Chapter 3 it was shown that the output pulse amplitude from most gamma-ray detectors is proportional to the energy deposited by the gamma ray. The pulse-height spectrum from such a detector contains a series of full-energy peaks superimposed on a continuous Compton background. Alth...
